Hellenic Police Boost Security After Protests Against Israel Passenger Liner

Hellenic authorities have dramatically enhanced security measures at multiple key ports in an attempt to keep protesters from reaching a cruise liner transporting Israeli tourists on an 11-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Demonstrations Trigger Increased Security

The heightened security at the Peloponnesian ports followed earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris docked at Kalamata recently. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were blocked from going ashore and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after community members held rallies on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is persisting with its attacks in Gaza," remarked an educator who joined the Kalamata demonstration. "Civilian, unarmed civilians are being killed."

Tourist Experience and Popular Opinion

From the upper deck, travelers watched as protesters in Kalamata shouted: "You need the police, you're not wanted in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-conflict rallies throughout Greece, asserted: "Israeli visitors who approve of the decisions of their government aren't embraced here."

International Background and Diplomatic Ties

Constantine Filis noted: "Due to regional nearness and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the average Greek is more sensitive to what is transpiring in Gaza than the typical citizen of central or northern Europe."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a difficult position," he continued. "Israel is significantly more crucial for us as an ally than it is for many European nations."

Economic and Travel Consequences

Official data indicate that more than 600,000 Israeli travelers came to Greece in 2024, with estimates of increased visitation this year. This considerable inflow underscores the much-improved relationship between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Tactical Partnership and Geographic Factors

From Athens' perspective, Israel serves as not only a important balance to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also provides the additional advantage of better official channels to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its relations with Israel," remarked Filis. "But from a humanitarian perspective we must be more accepting, more measured, more committed to demonstrate the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Demonstration Campaign and International Reaction

The magnitude of the Greek demonstration campaign has caught Israel off guard. In recent months, the state's external affairs office warned visitors to maintain a low profile, while domestic press characterized Athens as a "lost paradise" due to political graffiti emerging on buildings in the downtown area.

Victor Eliezer of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece voiced worry: "Of course we're anxious. The type of language we're hearing can quickly turn into discriminatory."

Upcoming Developments and Requests

Progressively, critics have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to demand the termination of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO facility that since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza has operated as a important supply station for US military ships, military jets and vessels bound for Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," announced Petros Constantinou. "Our primary request, now, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
