In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
