No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
